No BS... Please, Just the Facts and Opinions Wanted

Alright… I’m going out on a limb… AGAIN.

This time, I’m looking for input from you.  If you read Debra Conrad’s blog or Tiffany Dow’s blog then you are already familiar with the drill…

I’m enrolled in Tiff Dow’s 30 Day Branding Challenge and part of the challenge is to figure out how my audience, YOU perceive me.

I would be grateful if you could respond to this post … in the comments below for all to see!

This exercise will help me understand what you like, what you don’t like, what I should change… and what I should keep the same.

I’m looking to you to get YOUR view of me…

The Questions

1. What do you like or dislike about me,
or my business?

2. What do you trust or not trust about me?

3. If someone asked you who I was,
what would your answer be?

4. What main thing do you think I offer as a product or service?

5. Compare me to other marketers in general – how do I stack up?

6. Do I affect your life for the better or worse?

7. How do you think my partnership with Stuart Turnbull will ultimately affect you?

The Answers

These are up to YOU!

I hope you will “indulge” me in this exercise.

I am really trying to learn how you see me, and what I need to do to improve!

I’m looking for you to be completely upfront with me… NO holds barred.

Turn OFF the bullsh*t pipes… I don’t want you to blow smoke up my ass!

Bring it on!

Best ~Deb

    Deb,

    Here goes:

    1. What do you like or dislike about me,
    or my business?

I like that you have regular new content on your site. I just read your article on how to make your own light box for taking better photos for eBay listings. Great idea. And your photos leading up to it did a good job of showing what you were talking about. This makes you stand out by actually showing something concrete.

Dislike? Well, you seem very nice. So this is a tough one. Your FISHING FOR NICHES banner is a bit busy and cutesy for my taste. Maybe there’s a way to refine it just a little. Keep your personality, but tighten up the design–especially the fonts and the background pattern. I like that you use your photo, though. It makes it seem like there’s a real person giving advice.

    2. What do you trust or not trust about me?

I trust that you have actual eBay/online selling experience. So many people talk about it in theory. Or pass on advice that is ten years old. But you seem current. And I think it’s important to have up-to-the-minute selling experience if you’re going to teach others.

You seem very trustworthy. In general, I want Internet gurus to know more than I do. Otherwise, why would I buy their information? So if I ever buy one of your products, I want to trust that you’ll share something I don’t already know, and that it will be something that helps me make more money, or saves me time.

    3. If someone asked you who I was,
    what would your answer be?

You come across as the friendly housewife-next-door. Creative. Friendly. Someone whose business is slowly evolving.

Ironically, you still seem to be fishing for your own niche. In a crowded marketplace, I’m not sure what makes you unique. You recommend other marketers’ products, so at first you seem like a well organized affiliate marketer. But you also write original articles. So you do stand out with your own voice through your original content. But my first impression of you is still as an affiliate marketer.

    4. What main thing do you think I offer as a product or service?

Because of the banner at the top of the page, FISHING FOR NICHES seems like your main product. But the more I read, it seems like your main products are the eBooks you promote for other people. Your articles are a great service. But I don’t think you’ve quite found a unique niche yet for yourself.

    5. Compare me to other marketers in general – how do I stack up?

    Lynn Dralle, http://www.thequeenofauctions.com.

What I like about Lynn is that she shows what she paid for items at garage sales and estate sales, then shows how much she made from them on eBay. And she has focused on selling dishes and flatware. So when she offers her own eBooks on selling dishes and flatware, she comes across as a specialist. She also still actively sells a pretty high volume on eBay, so she has up-to-the-minute experience.

    Tristen O’Brien http://www.theebayentrepreneur.com

Tristen’s site is pretty recent. But in a short time he has distinguished himself by showing where he goes to find merchandise. But not just Goodwill and other thrift stores. He lists stores where he goes to find new, deeply discounted merchandise to resell on eBay. And he lists prices, so you can see exactly how much profit he makes. He comes across as very genuine. No hype. Yet still motivating. And you can picture yourself doing what he’s doing, and actually making money at it.

How do you compare to these two? I’d say you have the same genuine quality. And real world experience. But you don’t yet have something that distinguishes you from the other eBay “experts” out there.

    6. Do I affect your life for the better or worse?

Whenever I come across a site like yours, it’s always motivating, and makes me want to do better selling on eBay. I don’t anticipate of each of your new posts…yet. I guess that’s the test. When I get an email from you saying you have a new article on your site, will it make me want to drop everything and read it right away?

    7. How do you think my partnership with Stuart Turnbull will ultimately affect you?

It will affect me postively if I get information that will help me make money. But so many “guru” ebooks and programs seem to be about how to make money selling your own “guru” program. So they tend to have the reputation of a chain letter (like the ones where you mail a dollar to the top name on the list hoping that a hundred people down the pyramid will each mail you a dollar.)

There is so much free information on the Internet. And so much information we gather on our own, and through our experience. I get a bit annoyed once I’m on an email list, and I hear the same hype, and the same plea to buy another life changing ebook/audio program/video tutorial/extras package. And then it turns out to be either:

    1) How To Make A Fortune Selling A Program Telling Other People How To Make A Fortune Selling The Same Program. It’s like the chain mail. You make money by selling a perpetual promise, without actually giving advice on how to do or create something concrete.

    2) Out-dated, rehashed ebooks.

So I’m hoping your partnership with Stuart Turnbull will result in something better:

    3) Fresh information on making money that doesn’t involve reselling that same information.

Please, I would love it if a guru wrote simple, practical advice that I could use to improve my business. Because I like selling on eBay. And I would like to get better at it. And I would be more likely to buy something like Lynn Dralle’s ebook on How To Sell Flatware on eBay because it’s something I can actually use. Or go to Tristen O’Brien’s site and get free information that is more valuable than many paid produsts I see out there.

So, I hope that helps. I tried to give you some honest feedback. And I do like your site, and think it has great potential.

    Thanks.

Hi Deb – Hear are my responses to your questions
    1. You are one of the most honest, friendliest and sincere people I have met on ebay. You offer great advice – most of it free! – and you find ways to give everyone some type of praise – not just sing you own!
    2. What is there not to trust – you are so open about you business life and your personal life – and you have some very respected people backing you up – or parterning with you
    3. First of all I would tell them about you unique way of finding you ninch – and then tell them you just found a new best friend!
    4. The main thing you over is new ideas on what to sell and how – and also you do offer consulting of how to sell on ebay
5.I will compare you with Stuart T. – your new partner, Skip McGrath and one other guy – I can’t quite remember his name at this time. You have your own style – and do not compare to another woman who gives out advice – has a big following – but just blows her horn too much about her huge sales!
    6. Most definetly in a better way – I wish you sent out a daily email – I would love to hear from you every day (Please think about it)
    7. I have been reading Stuarts’ emails for a longer period of time – and I think the two of you have come to a very wise decision to combine forces – Great minds think alike!
Thanks for giving me this opportunity to express my gratitude to you!!

  • Hi Deb,

Here are my answers to your questions. I hope they help you out with this project.

    1. I like the fact that you appear to be an honest & ethical marketer, which is rare these days. You’re very caring & helpful to your subscribers.

    2. Your replies to my emails show me a person who genuinely cares to help people succeed online. My interactions with you have been extremely pleasant, thus encouraging me to have the utmost trust in you.

    3. You are a successful marketer already in your own right. You have a world of potential ready to explode on the online market. Your name could very well be a household name one day.

    4. As an eBay education specialist…obviously you teach different ways one can be successful on eBay. However, you don’t stop there. You teach all kind of ways of thinking outside the box, which includes making money outside of eBay.

    5. You stack up well against many other marketers. Your approach to teaching is refreshingly simple, honest, and entertaining. You encourage people to feel very comfortable with you.

    6. Knowing Deb Henry has definitely been a positive thing in my life. I have been working with Deb & Stuart for a little while now. Let me tell you all…she can be a real drill sergeant. That’s a good thing. She wants only success for the people she works with. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Deb Henry.

    7. I feel if two creative minds join together, it can only yield great things.
Stuart & Deb are two excellent marketers who are making a name for themselves in the online world. I don’t know about you, but I certainly want to go along for the ride with them.

    Best Regards,

    George

Your blogs and emails are bright and bubbly. You come across as someone genuine trying to help others. Very enthusiastic. I bought your fishing for niches and didn’t quite follow it all and sent you an email but never got any answer. Would be great if you could get back to me on that. Otherwise always look forward to your emails, in particular like the ones combined with Stuart’s input .Don’t feel like you are hyping things up so compared to other marketers feel you can be trusted. Hope this helps.

  • 1. What do you like or dislike about me,
    or my business?
Like? – It seems to good sense to access business information in one spot letting someone else do the research and to find someone who is more organised than me putting it together to save me time and effort
Dislike – Website is a bit too flowery/girly-girly for me!

    2. What do you trust or not trust about me?

Your horoscope type thing on your website makes me wonder if everything else is hocus-pocus guesswork!!

    3. If someone asked you who I was,
    what would your answer be?

Teacher of “how-to-do-business on the internet”

    4. What main thing do you think I offer as a product or service?
    Consulting (mainly) on eBay selling

    5. Compare me to other marketers in general – how do I stack up?

Difficult one – for me you are not so well known (maybe my lack of knowledge?) so that may be a disadvantage in the marketplace HOWEVER because I am a big fan of Jim Cockrum then I know you have good standing as well because of your connection with him

    6. Do I affect your life for the better or worse?
Better – I learn stuff from your writings
Worse – (lol) I spend time reading your emails/blogs etc when perhaps I should be listing on eBay and Amazon where I sell

    7. How do you think my partnership with Stuart Turnbull will ultimately affect you?
Positively – I like and respect Stuart and think he runs a very “personal” business BUT do I now have read both of your emails (more time consuming?) or will there always be a joint one

  • I like hearing about all the things you accomplish and obstacles you overcome. It helps motivate me to do more in my own business.

I feel like you tell it like it is, therefore there is a lot of trust. You don’t promote any product you haven’t tried or created yourself. And you’re out to help people, which is important.

If someone asked me who you were, I would say you’re a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to Internet marketing strategies, but a specialist when it comes to all things eBay.

The main thing that you offer as a product or service ties into your experience with eBay as a seller.

Compared to other marketers when it comes to eBay, you have a lot of experience on them.

I would say that I am better off, which comes from reading your blog and getting detailed accounts of your internet marketing experiences over the past several months. You have a writing style that keeps the content fresh and interesting.

It’s a great idea for internet marketers to create partnerships, such as the one you have with Stuart. So much more can be evaluated and accomplished when two people put their heads together on ideas and projects.

  • Hallo Deb:

I have not known you for very long. But what is not to like? You are kind, helpful and accommodating in responding to questions. I purchased Stuart’s book and Steve Poke’s as well.I am enjoying both of them. I think your blog is attractive with an artistic flair. I am not the kind of person who deals in smoke or b.s. I hope all goes well for you from now on. Very best wishes, Betty

  • AnnaVZ

    Hi Deb,
In answer to your questions I submit the following:
    1. I like that you are doing the best you can given your personal (sometimes very difficult) situation. I don’t not like anything about that. It makes you a genuine person to deal with.
    2. Because you are “real” I am more likely to believe what your marketing emails tell me.
    3. I would say that you are an accomplished eBay seller and a learner internet marketer who is improving her skills rapidly.
    4. I think you provide options. You do not market any one thing in particular but offer different options for normal people (like you) to look at.
    5. You are still a real, pleasant person and haven’t got that “it’s all about the dollar” attitude that most of the internet marketers I come across have. You still have that genuine “I want to help you” vibe.
    6. Definitely for the better. I have bought one of your products and also one of your products with Stuart Turnbull. I’m happy with both of them and they ae making a difference for me.
    7. It will be a positive benefit because Stuart, as an experienced internet marketer, will open your eyes to other possibilities that you will be able to share with your subscribers. It is definitely a win-win situation.
